Rural Funder Atlas
Every U.S. private foundation that filed a Form 990-PF in 2024, ranked by grant dollars flowing to nonmetro counties (USDA RUCC 4–9). Search by name, filter by state, sort by total rural giving or share of total giving directed to rural recipients. Built from the IRS bulk 990-PF e-file dataset — the canonical source.

What this measures. Every dollar of grant disbursement reported on a 2024-filed Form 990-PF where the named recipient's ZIP maps to a U.S. county. We classify each grant's destination as metro (RUCC 1–3) or nonmetro (RUCC 4–9) using USDA Rural-Urban Continuum Codes joined to the Census ZCTA-county relationship file. "$ to rural" is the sum of grants that landed in nonmetro counties for that foundation. "HQ rurality" classifies the foundation itself based on the address listed in the form's Filer block (not the tax preparer). "Total giving" is the sum of per-grant amounts in the form's schedule of grants paid during the year — this can differ slightly from the aggregate ContriPaid line if a foundation lists grants below the $5,000 itemization threshold only as a total.
What this misses. About 16% of grant dollars went to recipients whose ZIPs we couldn't resolve (often Connecticut planning regions where the IRS cross-walk is stale, or grants where only city/state was provided but no ZIP). Foreign destinations (5.6%) are excluded from rural totals. Foundations that file their 990-PF by paper instead of electronically aren't in this dataset (~10% of small filers by count, <1% by dollars). And this is one year of giving — some foundations rotate priorities multi-year, so a low rural share here doesn't mean "never gives to rural."
