District Rurality
Counties don't line up with congressional districts, so we measured rurality the way the Census Bureau does: block by block. Each district is placed in one of five tiers by the share of its residents who live outside urban areas, from Urban (under 10%) to Rural (a majority of residents).
2026 district lines
Every one of the 435 House districts on the lines in use for the November 2026 election, shaded by the share of its residents who live outside Census urban areas. Darker green means more rural. Hover over (or tap) a district for its numbers; click a tier in the legend to show only those districts.
Rural share = 2020 Census residents in blocks outside urban areas ÷ all residents, summed from blocks on the 2026 lines (Census TIGER/Line 2026, 120th Congress). Ten states redrew for 2026 (AL, CA, FL, LA, MO, NC, OH, TN, TX, UT); their figures are built block by block. The other states use the Census Bureau's own figures for unchanged lines. Tiers are fixed cut points on each district's own population.
Ranked by Census rural share. The nonmetro column uses county lines instead, and can differ sharply: a district can be mostly rural while sitting inside metro counties.
